Benefits of Mindfulness

There are several benefits of mindfulness. First and foremost, mindfulness is a key piece for overall well-being. It helps you appreciate the joys in life as they occur. Practicing mindfulness also bolsters many attitudes, thoughts, and feelings that contribute to happiness. You can train your mind to observe your thoughts, feelings, and sensations with a new positive perspective to create a calmer mindset.

Benefits of mindfulness typically fall into two main categories:
Physical well-being
Mental well-being

Mindfulness techniques help improve your physical health in several ways including:

reducing stress
lowering blood pressure
reducing chronic pain
Improving immune system
improving sleep

Stress Reduction

One of the main reason people practice mindfulness is for stress reduction. When you are mindful, you are living in the moment and not thinking about the future and its uncertainties. By focusing on the here and now, you find that you are less likely to get caught up in the concerns about the future or regrets over the past.

One of the main contributors to high blood pressure is stress. Therefore, by reducing stress can lower your blood pressure.

Better Sleep

Mindfulness not only helps you reduce stress, but it can also help you get a better night’s sleep.

Often times at night, you may lay in bed with thoughts racing through your head. Mindfulness techniques can quiet the mind and induce a relaxation response.

Improves Mental Well-being

Mindfulness techniques help improve your mental health in several ways including:

Heightens your level of awareness
Allows you to experience the present moment
Allows you to experience calmness and peacefulness
Allows you to be in harmony with your being
Fosters contentment
Increases self-awareness
Allows for self-development
Increases concentration and focus

Mindfulness and creativity can add to the quality of our lives in numerous ways, from nurturing a sense of inner peace to improving the quality of our lives, from enhancing self-confidence to facilitating deeper and more meaningful relationships with others.

In children specifically, mindfulness has been found to:
- can teach children and adults about how strong emotions can take hold, and how to find peace when these strong emotions come up.
- mitigate the effects of bullying (Zhou, Liu, Niu, Sun, & Fan, 2016)
- enhance focus in children with ADHD (Zhang et al., 2016)
- reduce attention problems (Crescentini, Capurso, Furlan, & Fabbro, 2016)
- improves mental health and well-being
- improve social skills when well taught and practiced in children and adolescents. As well as communication skills between parent and child/adolescent.

Plenty of research show that mindfulness is capable of improving mental health and well-being, attention, self-regulation, and social competency when well taught and practiced in children and adolescents.

Introducing mindfulness-based practices into everyday practice can have a life-long impact on the psychological, social, and cognitive well-being of children and teens.

  • Defining shame
  • Practicing empathy ( for self and others)
  • Exploring triggers and vulnerabilities
  • Practicing critical awareness
  • Reaching out to others
  • Creating, embracing, and inspiring change
